Whether meticulously orchestrated months in advance or seized as a spontaneous opportunity to leverage favorable circumstances, Sakurazaka46 set its sights on Malaysia for a new international odyssey, performing on August 19, 2023, at the Japan Expo Malaysia, in the vibrant city of Kuala Lumpur, just a few weeks after their first overseas performance.
2023, a pivotal year for the group, marked the dawn of a new era with the emergence of a fresh generation, the launch of three chart-topping singles, and the bittersweet departure of two cherished members, alongside other transformative milestones that marked the evolution of a new Sakurazaka ready to bloom.
However, in particular, one notable chapter amidst the events that unfolded in 2023 was the group’s embrace of a new challenge, embarking on a journey of exploration beyond familiar shores, transcending their established niche, and triumphantly taking its inaugural stride onto the global stage, captivating audiences at Japan Expo Paris 2023 in July, sparking a fervent desire for more among international fans.
Yet, while anticipation surged for the group’s expansion beyond Japanese shores, no one could have anticipated that the next leap would come merely a month later.
Japan Expo Malaysia is a celebration of Japanese culture that offers enthusiasts a platform to immerse themselves in various aspects of it, from anime and manga to music and food. The expo features a wide range of activities such as cosplay competitions, live performances by Japanese artists, panels, workshops, merchandise booths, and cultural showcases. It serves as an opportunity for fans of Japanese culture in Malaysia to come together, interact, and indulge in their shared interests.
Amid the bustling atmosphere of the Expo, the vibrant essence of Japanese culture takes center stage, as it did when, under the radiant sky on the Kaze Stage, Sakurazaka made their debut appearance in the country, captivating audiences with their unique blend of J-pop flair and mesmerizing choreography.
During the performance, the group extended a warm greeting in Malay led by Captain Matsuda Rina, instantly connecting with the eager crowd: ‘Apa khabar semua? Kami dari Sakurazaka46! Sangat gembira jumpa semua!’ (How are you all? We are Sakurazaka46! We are very happy to see you all!).
Dressed in their iconic white suits from their first album and adorned with their contagious smiles, Sakurazaka46’s first and second- generation electrified the atmosphere with their hit songs like ‘Nagaredama’ and ‘Masatsukeisuu’, culminating in an explosive finale with ‘BAN’ and ‘Start Over!’, stirring the crowd with their melodies and execution.
Somewhat different from the group’s experience in its first overseas venture, the presentation drew numerous ‘Buddies’, who brought their own group merchandise to the performance, creating a special atmosphere, with some even jumping at the beginning of ‘Start Over!’, replicating the song choreography, and demonstrating the group’s impact in the region.
In a crescendo of melody and motion, Sakurazaka46’s performance at Japan Expo Malaysia left a powerful impression, weaving together the rich features of Japanese pop culture with the boundless enthusiasm of their Malaysian fans.
Interestingly, Sakurazaka46’s Malaysian trip was a pleasant experience not only for the Kaze Stage audience on August 19th, since the group’s journey was not confined to the stage.
